Codeine Velvet Club

Full of retro-cool
by Hannah

This is the debut album from the band Codeine Velvet Club, and is a complete breath of fresh air, as there is nothing quite like it in the Brit charts and makes a difference from the indie and electro bands we’re used to hearing at the moment.

It oozes cool with its retro-modern sound. Adding to the bands distinction to other current artists is having both male and female lead singers in Jack Lawler and Lou Hickey, Hickey’s vocals slip onto the record like honey, while Lawler’s add a rougher, more modern sound.

You sit there listening to Lawler’s vocals and think: I recognise the voice but can’t remember where it’s from? Lawler is the front man of Glaswegian indie band the Fratellis, this album is a spin-off project in between Fratellis albums.

Rockier tracks such as ‘Little Sister’ are bound to be a hit at the festivals this year, while sultry track ‘Vanity Kills’ sounds like it belongs in a bar in soho and ‘Like a Full Moon’ sounds like it should be in a Bond film.

Although some of the tracks do sound rather similar and seem to merge into one, overall this album is full of retro-cool and bound to be hit with people who want something different from the current British pop scene.
